I had the same problem…I got it fixed…Win-XP… Due to a power failure, the computer was rebooted, but without desktop icons, and taskbar and start menu (the taskbar didn’t respond from control panel). The icons were back quite easy, using “restore my last good setting…” I tried everything that was posted on the internet (and really everything, the all 9 yards), but no luck. I read in one forum that the Microsoft support person suggested to reformat the drive and reinstall XP. I was very close to doing so, but the story is this. I could see the taskbar and start menu in “Safe mode” (the icon in control panel was working as well). I remember that while trying to install Win-XP, I got a message that nVidia (VGA controller driver) didn’t pass Windows logon???!!! I checked the nVidia manager icon in safe mode and it didn’t work (disabled by “Safe Mode”). The taskbar and Start menu worked, and vis versa in normal mode. Therefore, I uninstall my VGA driver (nVidia) and what do you know it worked!!! I reinstall nVidia and all is fine now. I think the safe mode can tell a lot about your system, and can use as a to locate the problem. Good luck Raz
