I stumbled across another registry setting that allowed me to disable the numlock
on startup in XP Pro on our Sony Vaio :
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
I set the "InitialKeyboardIndicators" key to "0"
This worked for me .....
