There are many configurations of parallel cables; they can be wired differently and
look identical. You need an INTERLINK cable as described here:

If you're not sure what you have, test it with an ohm meter.
If you're using a serial cable, it must be the null-modem variety. (some of the
connections are switched) You can supposedly use a USB cable too.
