W2K had problems with fastfat.sys when older programs used a rarely implemented method 
to query for file names or volume names.

Are you running one legacy program that might be the culprit?

Other shot-in-the-dark ideas would include ensuring that you are using the latest 
BIOS version for your mobo and the latest mass storage controller (chipset) drivers 
for both the SATA disk and the IDE disk.
