Thanks lolwhite. That is it. all of the rest of the register changes and other
stuff is nonsense. thanks for that easy solution.

Right click on any picture and select "Properties". Near the top of the dialogue
box you'll see the line "Opens with". Click on "Change" on the same line, and select
"Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". Click OK and voila! This should make it the default
for all your pictures.
