XP does not recognize sound device

I just installed XP Pro on my new Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe motherboard, which has an on-board
sound card. It has a built-in C-Media CMI9880 sound device.
However, no sound device shows in the hardware profile. When I install the driver
from the CD that came with the motherboard, the installation stops and terminates.
Anyone having similar problems?
