I should have mentioned that Gateway had a documented issue with my Profile 6 that described the loss of a link with this particular machine. The fix was to upgrade to the most current BIOS. But the instructions were to simply restore the defaults and reboot. That did not work. I did not get a link until I disabled the "LAN" peripheral setting in the new BIOS and then rebooted and then booted again and enabled it.
