I can confirm,
I just had the same problem and it was caused by the media (the cdrom used).
The media (CDR) had no scratch but wouldn't work.
I used another media (older with little scratches) and everything went fine.
Didn't try to scratch the cd to see if it would work then ;-)
Definitly XP is bad with media when on install.
