While my Thinkpad-modified version of XP Pro has proven 99.999999 stable, a recent
install on a new P4 machine shows at least two disturbing, posibly related problems
including the taskbar/icon vanishing act - which seems to occur when a request is
made to do something "impossible" - like refresh a file still showing open on the
screen though it has been deleted (why the situation eists in the first place is
a mystery...).
My easy solution has been either to three-finger-salute and force a shut-down of
all non-responding apps and folders. If this doesn't solve the problem than rebooting
corrects it. Considering this is SP2-included edition, it seems there's more sloppiness
coming out of Redmond.
The second problem concerns a significant lack of folder-style memory and a very
annoying default to Tiles/Auto Arrange/By Name though "W2K Classic" styles are specified
throughout. Anyone got an idea where in Registry to fix this one - along with the
chronic failure to FAIL to start various crucual and standard services, esp. print
spooling?
