The better solution is a two-step process:
First, make messenger visible in 'Add Remove Windows Components' by editing
c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf, remove the word 'hide' from the line
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 (leave all the commas), and then save
the file.
Go to control panel, run Add/Remove programs,
and click the 'Add/Remove Windows Components' button.
Messenger will now be displayed in the list TWICE -
click the checked box next to the second entry,
with the grey diamond icon. NOTE: Due to a bug, the check may not visually disappear
until you "click off" of the list entry, by clicking another entry in the list.
Once you are satisfied that the check is gone, click
next. Messenger will be removed.
