What they're trying to tell you is when in doubt, reformat your HD and clean install
the OS of your choice. You described multiple problems with both of your OS's, which
you obviously have on seperate partitions. If one of your partitions is as heavily
infected and corrupted as you describe, the other may be on it's way out also. Why
take chances. Wipe that HD and start fresh and clean.
