The option Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop was selected in my system
but it would not have the expected effect because I had Active desktop content. When
I removed a web page that I had on my desktop, then the icon labels got transparent.
Thanks Bill, now I understand what "logical" means for Microsoft: If a web page is
sitting ontop of your desktop wallpaper, why bother to have transparent icon labels
anyway ;-)
