I have been having a very similar problem with .avi files crashing Windows Explorer whenever I so much as click on the file or try to display them in thumbnail view. I have narrowed it down to a number of specific files where the problem occurs, but I cannot figure out what is wrong with them. Sadly, the regedit trick did not work for me.
