Thanks for your feedback. I found the answer was a new CD-RW drive. No matter what
I did, even exchanging for another drive (thinking defective). I returned this brand,
and bought another (more expensive, of course). Installed it and had no more software
issues. Everything reinstalled just fine and has worked since.
