I just upgraded from Win98 to XP and have also noticed problems with task bar auto-hide.
Mine occurs when more than one window is open and I move the mouse pointer to the
bottom of the screen. The task bar won't pop up initially (it tries to, but immediately
hides again, appearing to 'flash' each time I move the pointer to the bottom of the
screen). After several tries it finally stays in view. Sorry I don't have any ideas
for a fix, but my search of internet forums shows widespread problems of this type
in Win XP.
