Thanx much. I know just enough about Windows to get myself in a world of trouble,
so may I double-check these items with you to make sure I understand?
1. I ran sfc /scannow, and it is prompting me for an XP Pro CD-ROM because some OS
files "have been replaced by unrecognized versions". I have an XP(SP1a) Reinstallation
CD that came with my Dell computer, so I plan to use that. Does that mean I should
reinstall XP SP2, or can I rely on Windows Update to let me know what I need?
2. I changed my Tools>Folder options...> View to display system and hidden files,
and found the DESKTOP.INI Configuration Settings file. Since I will back this up
then delete it, I assume it will be recreated at some point. I was wondering if
this requires a restart, and how I will know if I want the old one back?
3. I opened regedit, and see a File>Import... menu. Is that what I use to merge
the new file?
I apologize if this is becoming burdersome, but I really do appreciate your help
in this battle to restore functionality. I'm on a mission!
I'll wait to hear back before I proceed. Thanx again, Wereotter.
