this post is just to add what worked for me - there doesn't seem to be a single fix
- when I originally went into the recovery console, I couldn't run dir or change
to any other directory - then I ran chkdsk, which seemed to go through without errors
except after that I could see all the directories and I could also boot into safe
mode (which didn't work before) - I didn't change anything else - I rebooted and
the system went straight in (xp home)
