Indeed, it works fine, I've used it myself to restore
onto a new hard drive. The old one was still OK,
but I chose to backup onto external USB hard
drive and then restore for several reasons. First,
the old drive sitting in a closet is itself a full backup
as of the last date of use. Second, I figured this
was my chance to practice a bare metal restore
without risk, since during the restore the old drive
was twenty feet away from the computer. Third,
now I know the full backup from
which I restored was usable.
It is a little tedious, because I had to first install a
temporary instance of XP in a secondary partition,
then restore onto the primary partition, but it
worked fine. The reason for putting the temporary
instance on a different partition is to avoid issues
with open Registry hives and other system files
during the restore.
I make full backups from time to time onto two
different USB drives, of which only one is at any
time connected -- by swapping them, I protect
myself against something like a lightning surge or
fire that could take out both my internal hard drive
and any external drive connected to the computer.
Also I regularly archive my document files to CDs.
Multiple copies of multiple backups, and regularly
testing those backups, are
vital for me to have confidence in the safety of my
data.
