A previous CD-RW/DVD "death" had been repaired by the AutoPlay Wizard. On the second
death, I downloaded a driver repair tool called "XP_CDDVDFIX.EXE" created by Doug
Knox and available at http://www.dougknox.com/ (Go to "Win XP Fixes," look in the
right-hand column for "Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer.") That fixed my problem.
But then, while playing a CD on Media Player (blech), my AVG AntiVirus began an update
and--ZAP!--no more AutoPlay or nothing. I ran the AutoPlay Wizard and got two unrepairable
problems: Legacy AutoPlay and Autoplay V2. I tinkered for almost 20 hours, (reviewed
EVERY message here, too) but finally found a solution: AVG sometimes encounters bugs
with Roxio Easy CD Creator. I upgraded Easy CD 5 (available at www.roxio.com), then
deleted all instances of AVG from all user accounts on my computer. My CD-RW/DVD
drive (a Teac 28W) recovered. Then I downloaded a new version of AVG, installed it
and I'm back to normal. [Next week, I dump Windows for Linux. Time to step up to
an OS that is built to work, not to give me work.]
