here's a solution:
go to system in control panel (or hit Windows-key+Break).
in the advanced tab, choose environment variables.
change the system variable named 'PATHEXT'
so that it includes .LNK
it should look something like
.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.VBS;.JS; .etc.; .LNK
then you run a shortcut by typing the name with or
without .lnk at the end. like:
$> c:\links\firefox
where firefox.lnk is the name of the shortcut.
