Unable to open Windows Updates

I have windows xp professional on my system. My windows update have been working fine untill recently. I mistakenly turned it off and later when I tried to activate it again it hangs. This is what it does now anytime I tried to open it. Furthermore, since then any time I update my antivirus on the Internet the update refuse to work on the system. Anyone else had this problem?
