I am not talking about that (and there's no way I'm going to open up this brand new
laptop :-). The POST test doesn't make a noise anyway on an Inspiron 9200.
The noise I am talking about is when a program running in a command window prints
a BEL (chr(7)) character.
I have since discovered that the XP "Volume Control" applet has an "Options|Properties"
dialog that allows me to display a "PC Speaker" volume control. If I crank that WAY
down (so it's like one pixel off the bottom stop) then the beep becomes bearable.
Thanks for your reply.
