I use McAfee AV and Firewall, Spybot S&D and AdAwareSE. Period. I have never had my system benetrated. Yes the bugs come in, but they are detected and eradicated before they ever get started. As Carol stated, ONLY run one AV program at a time. A good firewall is a must and stay off of the Kazaa type sites...
