I've written a little program to solve some problems with the open/save dialog boxes.
This program, called OpenWide, allows you to specify the size and position of the
dialog boxes, as well as where the input focus should be and which view is enabled
- (Details, Large Icon, Thumbnails...etc.)
It's free, but it has not yet been extensively tested, so there are no guarantees.
Currently *seems* to work on Win2K and WinXP.
