Incase someone reads the last post and has no idea what I'm talking about here's
the explaination...
When you open your window manager (Windows) lot's of "required" system services are
launched. The system tray is one of those services. In my case I found that the
system tray wasn't launching at startup as it's supposed to. In the Windows registry
(Start/Run/regedit) the address to programs that run on startup is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
I added another string to the apps that already load on startup by right clicking
in the right hand side pane and choosing New String Value. I named that value System
Tray then right clicked on it to Modify. In the place where it says Value Data I
put C:\WINDOWS\system32\systray.exe then clicked OK. That was all I needed to do.
I rebooted and incame the volume icon and the hardware removal icon. I was happy.
