Thanks for the ideas.
When using the Folder Option applet, I get exactly
the same misbehaviour .
I've considered editing the registry, and have looked
at the /HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications subkey, but it's not obvious to me what to
change or add. If I look at the entry in that key for Excel.exe, for instance,
I see nothing that appears related to the association with .xls ... the string "xls"
does not even appear under that branch.
