I've been through the same process, used the Nero utilities, ect with no luck. In
XP look and see if data (example an MP3 file) can be selected and under the file
menu, can it be sent to the CD Burner, is there a record tab under properties for
the drive, if no, then XP does not recognize the unit as a burner. The registry will
have to be changed. WARNING - be careful in this process. Click START and then
RUN, in the box, type REGEDIT and click ok. By clicking on the +'s, navigate as follows
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives
on the file menu, click EXPORT, in the box type backup of drives, click save. In
the left panel click VOLUMES{GUILD} folder under drives, there will be a 32 character
identifier for each CD Drive. In the right panel, double click DRIVE-TYPES, There
will probably be a 3 in the VALUE DATA box, it should be changed to a 1 for a CD-R
or a 2 for a CD-RW drive, click ok and quit regedit. Now go to My Computer, right
click on the CD-Burner drive, click properties, you should have a record tab now,
click enable CD Recording, for record speed, pick fastest. If NERO still does not
see the drive, I have changed to a newer drive. Good Luck
