I have had the same problem regarding the task manager icon in the system tray which
shows the cpu usage. I also have tried many of the solutions here, and some work,
some don't, and even then they don't always work. But I have found a permanent solution
and some other partial solutions which should be helpful to everybody who is concerned
about only the cpu meter icon. Other icons are not included in this fix.
1. the permanent solution is to download a third-party cpu applet which shows the
meter in the systray and doesnt flake out and disappear half the time. There are
many out there, but the one I used is at
www.outertech.com and called "cpuusage" or something. It is a small download (487k),
and has a little meter that works the opposite of the windows meter. When the meter
is at the top, it's good and when it's empty, it means the cpu has no remaining capacity.
Similar to a battery meter, showing spare cpu capacity, not used cpu . If you place
mouse over icon it shows you the used % number. It is also color coded, with green
at the top, going to yellow and red at the bottom. It takes some getting used to,
but it does the job. You can set it to load at startup.
2. The partial "fix" I have discovered involves 1 or 2 steps.
First, open task manager and use it to kill itself. That is, highlight taskmgr.exe
inside processess, and end task. Then run another instance of it by ctl-alt-del and
the meter sometimes comes back.
If that doesn't work, then close it again and go to
www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and download reg tweak #113 on that page.
Run this reg edit code and then try taskmgr again. Try step 1 and the cpu icon returns.
This worked for me, and in fact was the ONLY thing that worked for me to return the
cpu icon. But, I also like the outertech applet because it's no hassle and I don't
have to live with more xp bugs with band-aid fixes.
Hope this helps some of you.
