When you install windows, UPnP detection is usually not started. If you are reading
this forum, did you specifically enable this feature yourself by going to [Add of
Remove Programs --> Add or Remove Windows Components --> Networking Services -->
Details...] and clicking the box next to UPnP User Interface? Because I know I did
that. And now my computer stopped displaying icons.
I have been reading this thread closely and noticed a lot of the repairs involve
disabling the UPnP service. UPnP is primarily and connection between a program on
your computer and router, where the program gives specific port forwarding instructions
to the router. Windows does not need to detect these for them to work. (However,
I do know of UPnP devices over a network, such as a network printer with it's own
connection on the network, that might need this service, but I know very little about
such things since I only have a small home network)
Also I noticed someone mention Plug and Play hardware... UPnP has nothing to do with
Plug and Play hardware. UPnP is about internet connections and portforwarding and
network devices making themselves known on a home network. That is why it is in "Networking
Services" and not in a category like Hardware Installation or something like that.
So, I took this action to fix my computer. I disabled the UPnP service and I left
all of the others checked for testing purposes. My icons are back again going on
20 starts now. I hope this information is helpful. If you notice I have not done
my homework on UPnP, please correct me.
Thanks,
Mark
