Hi Gordon, I hate this about XP. With earlier versions of Windows this wasn't a problem.
I have managed a "workable solution" for my preferences, I'll see if I can help you.

First thing you need to do is Open your My Documents folder and place it and size
it exactly how you want it to stay. Next, Click on Tools->Folder Options->View Tab->Advanced
Settings->Remember each folder's view settings (scroll down to it and check the box).

Now, the messed up thing about XP is that any point AFTER you've done this to your
My Docs folder (and it's working fine), if you later change settings to OTHER folders,
and click on "Apply to all Folders", you lose your My Docs folder settings.

Also (and this is even more annoying to me), if you open your perfectly sized and
placed My Docs folder and within that WINDOW you go UP to another folder or DOWN
to another folder, your properly placed and sized window doesn't belong to My Docs
anymore. It belongs to the NEW FOLDER you opened in that window. So since you've
checked the box "Remember each folder's view settings", now the new folder gets the
saved view settings. If you then open My Doc's again, XP often won't place a new
window directly on top of another one, so it loses part or all of it's previously
saved characteristics.

So you end up having to make sure you:
1. Size and place My Docs how you want it
2. Check the box "Remember each folder's view settings"
3. Afterward, Don't change folder settings and "Apply to all folders"
4. Within the My Docs folder, if you explore UP or DOWN to another folder, GO BACK
to My Docs before closing the Window.

This will keep My Docs opening how you want it. Not too much of a PITA once you understand
how to MAKE it work.

Ken
