The NoTrayItemsDisplay trick worked for me.
Ran SP1 in classic mode, with TrendMicro antivirus, and with a password login for
quite a while, and never really noticed the problem until after upgrading to SP2.
Thankfully found this forum and tried the logoff/login trick. Not only did it work,
lo and behold there were icons there which had never showed up before even
with SP1.
Reading all the posts here, it seems apparent that there are several possible causes,
which would be why some of the solutions work for some people and not for others.
I thought the idea of making systray.exe run either by putting it in "run" in the
registry or putting a shortcut in "startup" should force the tray to refresh, so
ought to be a more general-purpose solution than disabling this or that service.
This had no apparent effect for me, though.
I then decided to try the NoTrayItemsDisplay trick in the registry, quoted below
and also described in other posts here, with different methods to achieve the same
effect. I was sceptical because judging by the name of the DWORD and the notion
that 1 ordinarily means "on" while 0 means "off," this looks to me like a device
designed to turn off having tray icons. Setting it to 0 should be like saying
I don't want to not have tray icons, which is default behavior of the system if it's
functioning properly anyway.
Anyway, gave it a try, and hey! It works! Who cares if it's logical or not, as
long it has the desired effect! (That's not really my philosophy in life, only in
Windows.)
