Well I thought the NoTrayItemsDisplay registry setting was working, but pretty soon
icons started disappearing again on about half of my boots. I don't want to fiddle
around with solutions which only work some times, and nobody seems to have posted
that the below solution did not work for them, so I figured I'd try it.
It is working so far, knock on wood. If it stops working I'll try something else.
There must be a million people having the same problem, and they may stumble across
this thread eventually, so it would be nice to be able to say what really works or
not.
