Thanks for your input. Turns out my adding two directories to the path via the autoexec.bat was the culprit. Apparently the system assumes that a set path= line in the autoexec.bat will concatenate the path variable rather than replacing it. I fixed the problem by clearing out the autoexec.bat commands and adding those two directories to the path via the Control Panel instead.
