Laptop hangs on boot; I've tried everything!

I have Windows XP Home on a Gateway M500 laptop. When I first started having this
problem, it would boot in Safe Mode or VGA mode, but not normal. Now I can't even
get to my desktop. I can 'hear' the logon chime, but the display hangs on what I'm
guessing is a chkdsk screen? It's white writing on blue background, with the Windows
logo in the top right. It says something
to the tune of:

"Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot open volume for direct access.
Windows has finished checking the disk.
..."

Somebody help- I've tried everything!

Thanks,
-Chris
