I've just had the same problem as you've been suffering from. Maybe its a bit late,
but here is the solution.
First of all, I am in the habit of installing lots of (trial) software, ending up
with lots of desktop icons, which in the end get corrupted.
So first of all, you have to increase the size of XP's icon cache. You do this by
navigating with regedit to:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
In the right hand pane, double click on MaxCachedIcons and set it to a larger value
like 4096.
Close regedit. Now you must refresh the desktop, for instance by the icon size trick
(32->33->32) mentioned earlier in this thread.
And that should give you a desktop with good icons!
