First of all disable drop shadows in system properties, advanced, performace settings. Then disable Active Desktop. For some reason I was unable to disable AD from the windows context menus so I used this fix: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/activedesktop.vbs (Good site by the way) Then I got Iconoid (Free icon and tweaking tool): http://www.sillysot.com/iconoid.zip Once you have iconoid open go to the first tab, and if you disabled the things I listed, you should be able to select transparent and then apply it and boom your icon background should be gone.
