Win XP is different from previous versions of Windows, as it isnt built on top of
DOS, it is an operating system with its own hardware access. In previous versions,
they loaded DOS, THEN used DOS to load the rest of the OS. Windows XP NEVER loads
DOS, so you wont be able to go to XP unless you actually boot into it. That said,
your post states "I start the computer and go to the DOS prompt to do work there."
- how do you get to the DOS prompt? Are you actually booting into XP and then running
the command prompt, or doing something different. If you are doing what I think,
this is not actually the DOS prompt, but a SIMULATION built into XP (I know that
might seem like a minor difference, but its critical - XP doesnt actually contain
DOS at all, it just looks like it). In this case, the way to return to XP should
be to "exit", so if thats not working, you have a different problem. Let us know
how you're getting to DOS, and we can probably work out a way to get you back to
XP.
