I've had this problem for a while, but it's been worse lately.
I tried the recent suggestion of deleting those binary TrayIcon registry keys, and
the other steps associated. It didn't work, so I restored those keys (which I saved
first).
Then I tried going to My Network Places and chose Hide uPNP Devices. THIS WORKED!
It also seems like it boots faster.
I use some software that uses upnp to open ports on my router, so I didn't want to
disable it completely.
Interesting note:
my router used to show up in My Network Places. I noticed it was not there anymore
before I chose to Hide upnp devices. If I then choose Show upnp devices, it appears
immediately, but after a reboot my router is gone from My Network Places even tho
it's set to show it.
This makes me think that there may be a problem related to upnp on my system... possibly
resulting in the icon problem when upnp is set to show devices...
I may investigate how to uninstall and reinstall as much of the network stuff as
possible (later).
