Thank you, Asa, for proving that there's life in this thread yet. Having had my
hopes built up and dashed with the NoTrayItemsDisplay setting and again with the
TrayNotify setting, I was thinking of giving up.
Your post reminded me that several earlier posts reccommended disabling UPnP and
SSDP in services. I hadn't tried that before because some people said they didn't
want to not have plug-and-play working, a feeling which I also share, and also because
a lot of people said it didn't solve their problem, so I figured why bother if it
doesn't work anyway.
Looking into it a little it turns out that UPnP and SSDP apparently not only don't
have anything to do with the ordinary plug-and-play, they seem to be involved with
opening a port to make your machine act as a network server, which poses a security
vulnerability.
Not only do I not need my machine to function as a server, I have a third-party firewall
running so UPnP and SSDP shouldn't work anyway even if they are active on the system.
With nothing to lose, I disabled them in services.
So what happened to my system tray icons? You may guess that they still don't all
appear. After a few boots I can say that I am losing less of them and the ones I
do lose aren't really ones I need to have, so this may be progress. On the other
hand I have a feeling I thought the same thing about the previous two fixes I tried
before realizing that it sometimes actually does lose icons I want.
What's next? Could try one of those utilities that delays startup of things, but
I would hate to make the boot process any slower than it already is. Sigh.
