Seems to be a lot on the net about this and similar problems. I installed XP and
no sound!!! - when I tried to check sound devices it just showed a modem. Like XP
had found the modem and thought - that will do nicely for the sound. Maybe it would
have but I had all the speakers plugged into the sound card - which as far as I could
see wasn't even found by XP. Suggestions on net were to remove sound card - restart
- put it back and restart and let XP find it - AND make sure you have the correct
driver ready - also found some mentions of doing things on the BIOS. Gulp! Anyway
- I was ready to remove the card but found a driver CD for Soundblaster so put that
in thinking it was the sound card driver - as it was installing I realised it was
just the drivers for the speakers I had bought. I never actually installed this when
I plugged in the speakers initially (and they worked fine with whatever was on the
PC). Anyway I thought this won't work as its not the driver for the sound card just
the speakers - and as far as I could see (though maybe I missed it) XP hadn't found
the sound card. God this is going on - OK - long story shorter - after install it
said updating drivers - and sound came back. Not sure if the software was clever
enough to search PC to see what sound card was on board and would normally override
any existing drivers.
