For me, this generic host problem only starts while a new 80gig External HD from
CompUSA is connected. Power off the external drive and the problem stops. The problem
does not cause the computer to shut down. I get the error message Generic Host Process
for Win32 Services, etc. and it references svchost.exe and the dll file ntdll.dll
(When the PC boots with the external drive turned on). The 2 things (that I've found
so far) is that (1) when I right clik the speaker icon in my desktop tray, everything
is grayed out and is not selectable and (2) when I open Norton System Works, it indicates
that my "live update" function has been turned off. These are the only two things
I have found so far. Again, if I power off the external HDD and reboot, the problem
does not occur. I have virus scanned my system (including the files on the external
drive, but find no problems). I still would love to find the resolution though,
because this HDD which has been hooked up for about 1 month, and the problem only
started occuring about 1 week ago.
