Once you track down the solutions to the problems you encountered, then you test how well the system is running by how smoothly a normal installation goes. After about the third uneventful installation in a row, you might then think about running with that one. You mentioned you thought the HDD could be one of the culprits. It's easy to go to the HDD's manufacturer's website and download the diagnostic utility that will test the disk.
