I don't know that this is of any use to you Helen, but I actually turn on the Windows
Update notification on my computer but only to the stage of being notified about
availability - definitely no automatic downloads! When I get a notification I click
the link to the KB article concerned and read the info on the update - then (if
I decide to apply that particular patch) I click the download link from the KB page
which lets me download/save to disk and install from there. This also lets me install
patches individually and check for problems instead of compounding the issue with
multiple installs. It works for me and I am able to burn any patches I have saved
to CD for any future reinstalls of Windows.
