Steve asked if both computers are running XP Pro, but you didn't answer. XP Home
does not have the ability to host a Remote Desktop session.
To access your XP Pro computer on your home network with a Remote Desktop (RDP) session
from outside the home network (say, from a buddy's house) requires that your router
be set to allow communication from the outside world to go thru the router's firewall
using certain ports. The default port for RDP is TCP 3389. You have to read the
router docs to learn how to do it...some routers call this setting up a server, some
call it opening ports, some call it port forwarding. Most router manufacturer support
pages will already have a FAQ for setting up the router to support RDP or other remote
control software, like pcAnywhere.
If you have two XP Pro computers on the same home network and want to access both
from the outside world, then one of them is going to have to have its RDP listening
port changed from the default 3389. See the MS KB below:
How to change
the listening port for Remote Desktop Be sure to read MS KB 304034 which is
linked at the bottom of the above article, which gives you the other half of the
equation when trying to access a nonstandard RDP setup. Of course, you'll need a
second entry in the router's server/port forwarding table, too.
To access your RDP machines from the outside world, outsiders will have to know your
IP address. If you have an ISP that changes your IP frequently, you can sign up
for a free Dynamic DNS service that will help you work around a "moving target IP"
quite nicely.
