I have noticed this too.
That's how I found this thread.
On my systems, it's usually one or two icons:network icon is always there as is antivurus
and pop up blockers.
the ones missing are sound and lately MS antispyware
My systems do not crash either, though I have seen that many times in past MS OS's.
Anyhow, fellas, this is a good thread, let's keep working until somebody figures
this out!
