Laptop upgrade to XP Home - wont boot after Bios setting changes and Windows Updates (SP2?)

Ok - After reading this entire thread for several hours, and based on my situation,
I believe that my problem is somehow ACTIVATION related.
I took my brother-in-laws old Compaq Presario 1200 which had a cracked power jack
which drained his battery, and told him I would overhaul it. I replaced the jack,
replaced the CR1220 button battery, and added another 128KB of memory.
His laptop was running Win98 on a 6GB drive nearly full, so copied the drive to 30GB.
It booted fine. Not to lose his programs/data, I did an in-place upgrade to XP
Home. I patched it lots of times via Windows update. Everything was fine. I removed
spyware and viruses. I defraged the drive. I downloaded lots of nice applications
(like Acrobot, WinZip, etc.) I updated the BIOS. I did lots of things over the
course of many evenings for several weeks. I even put on SP2. No problems.
I am not sure of exactly what triggered my case of the Muppets, but near the end
I copied files onto a USB memory stick (I do not believe he had ever used the USB
ports). I changed the BIOS boot order from floppy/drive/cd to drive/cd/floppy.
I think I set up power management in XP and the system hibernated (uh-oh). I dont
remember all that I did, but I do remember that fateful day when it booted up to
the Windows startup and FROZE. Using safe mode I could see it was something AFTER
Mup.sys (and not mup.sys, as many have incorrectly reported here).
I went back and put his old original Win98 drive back in, and Win98 did the reboot
loop. Mama mia!
Based on this behavior, I can only conclude that somehow either the extra memory
chip or the BIOS changes are the culprit here, as that is all that is different from
day 1.
So I stuck the 30GB XP drive back in and let it sit for months trying to find an
answer. Well my bro-n-law wasn't so happy with me no more, and he took his laptop
back home (1200 miles away).
NOW I find this thread. WOW - I wonder if just tweaking the BIOS boot order back
might just do it, or some of the other BIOS suggestions (ESCD, APCI - if those are
even accesible - I dont remember). Or recovering the registry, etc.
You guys have given me lots of ideas to tell my bro to try (if he will still talk
to me)....
