Installing SATA as primary and standalone drive

I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe MOBO. Decided to install a SATA drive. It goes AOK and
works the fine when the OS is Win98. When upgrading to WinXP Pro, at the first reboot
I get the dreaded WinXP blue screen and subsequent shut down. I've tried manually
installing driver at setup via F6, removing ALL unnecesary hardware, updating the
BIOS, reformating drive (it's a WD 120gig drive desktop version). I do not know what
else to do. Oh! I even tried installing the drive as a single RAID drive and I STILL
get the BSOD. Any serious sugestions? I mean, besides throwing away the drive?
