Thanks Rich. I'm not sure what you mean by going to the program using the shortcut
key (actually it's Alt-Ctrl-3 for Notepad, not 5) then deleting the shortcut.
But I have now tried all the following tricks:
1. use explorer to find all shortcuts on HDD called Notepad and delete them. Restart.
No difference.
2. rename the file NOTEPAD.EXE-336351A9.pf in the c:\Windows\Prefetch directory.
Restart. Windows re-creates the PF file. No difference.
3. Delete all copies of Notepad.exe. (one in Windows, the other in Windows\system).
Windows doesn't stop you doing it, but immediately re-creates both copies of Notepad.exe
ex-nihilo. No difference.
The MS site you recommended doesn't mention these key combinations. For about 10
years I have used Alt-Ctrl-number combinations to start various programs I regularly
use, because these were always unallocated in Windows. It looks as though some MSGeek
(I can't help thinking of Stanley in Jurassic Park!) has now secretly foisted his
own shortcut key preferences on everyone under the cover of a Service Patch. Or am
I getting paranoid? Is there perhaps some magic Registry entry I can use to get my
shortcut keys back?
