XP OPERATING SYSTEM
Hello Michele, Just take a look in the registry and see if this value is set correctly...
1. Run the Registry Editor(Regedt32.exe).
2. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following subkey:
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
3. Change the BootExecute entry from:
autocheck autochk * /r\DosDevice\C:
To:
autocheck autochk *
If it is already showing: autocheck autochk * , just let us know.
It might help to run this clean-up schedule first...
"Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore
cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive,
and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum.
Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders
and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows
folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs. Then remove the contents
of:
The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder
(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run
chkdsk and defrag."

Do you have a problem running Disk Cleanup? If so then delete the entire Compress
Old Files key in the registry...
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
3. Locate, and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
4. On the File menu, click Export, and then click Desktop, type VolumeCaches in the
File name box, and then click Save.
Note This step creates a backup of the VolumeCaches registry key. If you experience
any problems after you complete the steps that are listed in this procedure, you
can use this backup to restore the VolumeCaches key to its original state. To restore
the key, double-click the VolumeCaches.reg file on your desktop, and then click Yes.
5. Expand the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
6. Delete the Compress old files registry key.
7. Quit Registry Editor.
