I know this thread is old but I wanted to add my discovery to the list of fixes. I had found the acpi error event ID4 & 5 on two different AMD Duron based systems. In both cases I reformated the disk to FAT32 and the freezes/crashes disappeared. No idea why it worked - but it did!
